An imbalance in hormones secreted from testes, ovaries and adrenal gland, stimulate excretion of skin oil called as sebum. When the flow of sebum is obstructed because of keratones and dust, the skin pores gets blocked or plugged. This eventually leads to inflammation and infection by bacteria. When the inflammation around the blocked pores burst, the patient will get a bump, also called acne bump.
The more and common popular acne is managed by local treatment. Regular washing with mild soap and water, anti bacterial cleansers with chlorhexidine are mostly recommended for local treatment. Proprietary preparations, which contain benzoyl peroxide and retinoic acid, are the essential ingredients in the treatment of acne. Apart from these local medications, you can also use prescribed medications like Accutane, as suggested by your doctor. However, you should be very cautious when using this medication as it is known to cause serious side effects. Pregnant mothers and lactating women are not advised to ingest Accutane. These medications are to be used for more than three months to see satisfactory results. Some patients require larger doses for a longer time and need strict medical supervision for any serious side effects.
Isotretinoin is a recent, very effective drug for severe acne. It is prescribed as a lengthy course and it is known to drastically reduce the secretion of sebum. However, there are incidents of sebum secretion, reverting to previous levels, in case the medication is stopped. The side effects are varied depending on patients, like drying of skin and mucous membrane coupled with nausea and head ache. Abnormal functioning of liver is also noticed, which often limits the scope, while treating acne.
Isotretinoin is highly teratogenic, meaning that it can influence deformation of the growing embryo in pregnant women. So negative pregnancy test before, during the course and after for three months, coupled with oral contraceptives, is essential with the treatment.
