"Dum spiro, spero" is a Latin phrase that means "while I breathe, I hope." This can be the motto for many acne sufferers who hope to find a way to eliminate or at least reduce the scars that remain from their battle with the zit. Many of us bear these unsightly marks and are always on the lookout for effective acne scar removal methods. It's a good thing that scientific research has been growing by leaps and bounds, paving the way for those with acne scars to regain the healthy and smooth skin that they once had. With this increase in technological developments, there is reason to hope that more effective acne scar removal methods will emerge.

Your dermatologist will evaluate your skin condition and the type and severity of scarring you have before recommending the most effective acne scar removal technique for you. So-called ice pick scars are the most common remnants of acne; this looks like your skin has been pierced numerous times with an ice pick. Other types of scarring are follicular macular atrophy (small, white lesions), atrophic macules, depressed fibrotic scars (a complication of ice pick scars), and soft scars. All these imperfections may be ameliorated by modern medicine, traditional medicine, or a combination of both, and to restore smooth skin.

If your acne scars are superficial, over-the-counter topical creams and ointments just may do the trick. Some medications made from natural ingredients, such as rosehip seed oil and tea tree oil will not only help scars heal, they also make a significant contribution to prevent new scarring. Dermabrasion and microdermabrasion are two techniques to help make skin smooth; these processes involve the use of electrical devices to remove the top layers of the skin. The techniques can be compared to applying sandpaper to a rough surface. After the redness vanishes and the skin heals, it appears smoother and more even.

Chemical peeling is another way to lessen the impact of acne scars. Here, the top layer of the skin is removed via certain chemicals and its appearance is vastly improved. Laser resurfacing is another technology to promote smooth skin. Acne-damaged skin is burned away with a high-energy light, making the dermis appear fresher and more even. Some dermatologists might recommend injection-based therapies for acne scars, the two most popular of which are collagen injections and autologous fat transfer. Be reminded, however, that these injectables may be reabsorbed by the skin over a period of time, thereby necessitating repeats of the method.

To date, a 100 percent effective scar removal has yet to be discovered. What the aforementioned technologies and many more can only do is to visibly reduce the appearance of scarring, not totally eliminate it. However, this will go a long way towards restoring the self-esteem of "battle-scarred" acne sufferers. Perhaps one day soon, the technology to restore the petal soft, velvety smooth skin that we once had will be made available to us. "Dum spiro, spero."
